Animal management

Manage all your animals at a glance — the heart of Herdy.

Animal management is the heart of Herdy. Here you see your entire herd at a glance and manage all information about your sheep, goats, cattle, and pigs. The interface automatically adapts to your species — typical small-ruminant modules such as FAMACHA score or tail lengths are hidden on cattle-only farms.

What you find here

When you tap Animals in the navigation, you reach the animal list. This shows you all registered animals on your farm. At the top you see a small dashboard with the number of active animals, broken down by species (sheep, goats, cattle, pigs).

Below that you find the search bar and filter chips, which you can use to search for specific animals. Each animal is displayed as a card with the most important details: ear tag, name, breed, sex, and status.

What you can do from here

From animal management you have access to all key functions:

  1. Register new animal — Tap the Register new animal button to add a sheep or goat.
  2. Search and filter animals — Use the search bar and filter chips to find specific animals quickly.
  3. Open animal profile — Tap an animal to view all details, groups, health data, and history.
  4. Export animals — Download your animal list as CSV or PDF.
  5. Manage locations — Assign locations to your animals, e.g. farm, pasture, alp, or barn.
  6. Assign groups — Organise your animals into groups for production, breeding, pasture, or treatment.

Structure of the animal list

Each animal card shows you at a glance:

  • The ear tag in Swiss format (CH XXXX.XXXX.XXXX)
  • The animal's name (if assigned)
  • The species (sheep, goat, cattle, or pig) as a coloured badge
  • The status (Active, Sold, Deceased, Slaughtered, or Missing)
  • If an animal has an active withdrawal period, this is also shown

Tip: Herdy remembers the last species you selected. If you mainly keep sheep, "Sheep" will be pre-selected the next time you register an animal.

Pigs in Herdy

Pigs are supported as a fourth species alongside sheep, goats, and cattle. You manage them with individual animal records, just like the other species:

  • Breeds — The common Swiss pig breeds are available: Swiss Large White, Swiss Landrace, Duroc, Piétrain, PRIMERA, PREMO, Woolly pig, and crossbreeds.
  • Records — Each pig has its own profile with breeding (matings, litters), weights, treatments, and a health journal — exactly like sheep, goats, and cattle.

The key difference concerns the TVD: Swiss pigs have no individual TVD identity and are not registered animal by animal. Arrivals are reported to the TVD as group, count-based notifications (number of animals, source holding TVD number, and date) rather than per animal. See TVD integration for details.
