Breeding & Production

The breeding module is your central place for everything around reproduction and performance in your herd. From heat observation to the pedigree, Herdy accompanies you through the entire breeding cycle.

The tabs in the breeding area

Tapping Breeding & Production in the navigation brings up nine tabs:

Overview

The breeding module's home screen: due heat checks, upcoming births, the latest pregnancy checks and every ongoing pregnancy.

Heats

Heat monitoring is your work list: it tells you which animal needs a heat or pregnancy check and when, from the return-to-heat check after mating to the first heat of a young animal reaching breeding maturity. Next to it sits the breeding status of the whole herd, and in the journal every recorded heat.

Matings

Here you record and manage every mating, individually or as a mating group. Herdy calculates the expected due date and shows the check schedule per mating. This is also the way to the pregnancy check for several animals.

Births

Recording births with all the details: birth ease, mothering score, lambs, kids or calves. During lambing season, Lambing by scan is faster. Herdy creates the young animals automatically, links the parentage and prepares the TVD birth notification.

Pedigree

The pedigree shows ancestry across several generations, plus siblings, offspring and the inbreeding coefficient. It can be printed as a pedigree certificate.

Weights

Recording and analysing weights: the weighing list says which animal needs weighing, the chart shows the development, and Herdy calculates the daily gain and warns about underweight.

Tail Lengths

Document tail lengths, analyse them in a chart and export them as PDF or CSV.

Season plan

The season plan shows the breeding year as a band: mating period, birth window, actual births and alpine grazing on top of each other. The backward planner works out when the sire has to join the herd.

Fertility

The fertility analysis shows your herd figures with sample size and Swiss target values, plus the stored gestation lengths and cycle parameters.

How it all fits together

What makes the breeding module special is that all the data is connected:

1. You observe a heat or let the sire join the herd.
2. You record a mating or a whole mating group.
3. Herdy calculates the due date and schedules the checks.
4. After the vet's visit you record the pregnancy check, individually or for the whole visit at once.
5. At the birth the young animals are created automatically, together with parentage and a TVD notification draft.
6. In the pedigree you see the family relationships across generations.
7. The weight control follows the young animals' development.
8. The fertility analysis shows what the season delivered.

Tip: you do not have to start with a mating. If you want to add a birth for a purchased animal, you can record the birth without a linked mating.

Settings

The gear icon on the heats page lets you define, per species, the cycle and check values Herdy calculates with: cycle length, tolerance window, number of check cycles, timing of the pregnancy check, breeding season and more. The values and their sources are listed under Fertility analysis and Heat monitoring.
