Groups let you organise your animals by any criterion you like. They help you keep an overview and act on several animals in one step, whether that is treating, deworming or moving them.
Why groups
In daily work you rarely think about single animals. Most of the time you work with groups: the breeding group goes to the ram, the fattening lambs get weighed, the pasture group moves to another paddock. That is what groups in Herdy are for.
Groups give you:
- Overview: you see at a glance which animals belong together
- Fast filtering: in the animal list you can filter by group or switch straight to the group view
- Bulk actions: treat or deworm a whole group in one step
- Flexible organisation: an animal can be in several groups at once
- Seasonal planning: a group for summering, for lambing or for shearing
Where groups live
Groups appear in two places in Herdy, with a clear division of work:
Master Data > Groups is where groups are born and where they end. Here you create a group, add animals, remove them again and delete the group once it is no longer needed.
Animals > Groups is where you work with groups. The switch above the animal list shows every group as a card with animal count, location and warnings about running withdrawal periods and imminent births. Tapping a card opens the animal list narrowed to that group.
Group types
Herdy knows four group types:
- Production: animals kept for meat or milk, for example "Fattening lambs 2026" or "Dairy sheep"
- Breeding: breeding animals, for example "Breeding group Ram Max"
- Pasture: pasture groups, for example "Upper pasture" or "Summering Alp Muster"
- Treatment: animals needing a particular treatment, for example "Deworming spring"
The group type is an organising label. It sets the colour of the badge and helps you find things again. Only for Pasture does it have an extra effect: those groups can carry a location.
What you can do with groups
- Create groups: with name, type, description and colour
- View members: see which animals are in a group
- Add animals: individually from the animal profile, from within the group, or several at once from the animal list
- Remove animals: from the group or from the animal profile
- Treat or deworm a whole group: directly from the group page
- Delete groups: once they are no longer needed
Note: A group's name, type, description and colour cannot be changed after it has been created. Choose the name carefully. If a group no longer fits, create a new one and delete the old one.
Groups in other modules
An animal's group has effects beyond animal management:
- In the animal list it appears as a filter and as a coloured dot on the animal row
