Manage locations

In Herdy you can register the various locations on your farm. Locations help you keep track of where your animals currently are. Location details are also important for TVD notifications (animal traffic database).

Location types

Herdy supports four types of locations:

Farm

The farm is your main location -- your farmstead. You typically define one farm as your home farm. This is the default location that is pre-selected when registering new animals.

Pasture

A pasture is an outdoor location where your animals graze. You can register multiple pastures, e.g. for different paddocks or parcels.

Alp

The alp is a seasonal location for alpine summering (Sömmerung). When you bring your animals to an alp in summer, register it as a separate location. This is particularly important for TVD notifications during the Sömmerung.

Barn

A barn is an enclosed location on your farm. You can register different barns, e.g. a lambing barn, a shearing barn, or a quarantine barn.

Create a new location

  1. Go to your farm's Settings.
  2. Select the Locations area.
  3. Tap New location.
  4. Fill in the details:
    • Name - A descriptive name, e.g. "Upper pasture" or "Alp Musteralp"
    • Type - Select Farm, Pasture, Alp, or Barn
    • TVD number (optional) - The official location number from the animal traffic database
  5. Tap Save.

TVD number (location number)

The TVD number is the official identification number for a location in the Swiss animal traffic database. Not all locations require a TVD number. As a rule, your main farm has a TVD number, and alp locations often have their own.

Tip: You can find your TVD number on your official animal traffic database documents, or you can request it from your canton.

Set the home farm

The home farm is the default location for your farm. It is pre-selected automatically when registering new animals so you do not have to select the location manually each time.

To mark a location as the home farm, set the corresponding option when creating or editing the location. Only one location can be defined as the home farm at a time.

In the location list, the home farm is marked with the label (Home farm).

Assign animals to a location

You can assign a location to animals in two ways:

When registering a new animal

In the Location & pedigree section of the registration form, select the location from the drop-down list. If you have defined a home farm, it is already pre-selected.

When editing an existing animal

  1. Open the animal profile.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Change the location in the Location & pedigree section.
  4. Tap Save changes.

The location change is automatically documented in the animal's history.

Why locations matter

Locations are not only practical for your own overview. They also play an important role in official documentation:

  • TVD compliance: For notifications to the animal traffic database, locations must be recorded correctly. In particular for the Sömmerung (alpine summering), the alp location with TVD number is required.
  • Traceability: In the event of an outbreak, authorities need to quickly know which animals are at which location.
  • Farm overview: You can see at a glance how many animals are at each location.

Tip: Register your home farm and the most important locations right at the start, before you begin entering animals. This way the correct location is suggested automatically when registering animals.
