Breeding & Production
The breeding module is your central hub for everything related to reproduction and performance development in your herd. From mating to pedigree — Herdy guides you through the entire breeding cycle.
What you will find here
When you tap Breeding in the navigation, you reach the breeding area. All breeding-relevant functions are clearly laid out here:
Overview (Pregnancies)
The home page of the breeding module shows a timeline of all ongoing pregnancies. At a glance you can see which animals are pregnant, when the next birth is due, and whether any animal is overdue.
Matings
Here you record and manage all matings. Each mating is documented with dam, sire, date, and type of mating. Herdy automatically calculates the expected birth date.
Births
Record births with all details: birth progress, rearing behaviour, lambs or kids. Herdy automatically creates the young animals as new animals in your herd and links the pedigree.
Pedigree
View the pedigree of your animals across multiple generations. The pedigree shows parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents and supports your breeding decisions.
Weight
Record weights individually or as a batch weighing session. Herdy displays weight development as a chart and calculates the daily gain. This lets you spot early on when an animal is not growing optimally.
Tail lengths
Document the tail lengths of your animals — individually or as a batch measurement. Herdy displays development as a chart and allows export as PDF or CSV.
How everything connects
The breeding module's strength lies in the seamless linking of all data:
- You record a mating with dam and sire
- Herdy calculates the expected birth date and shows the pregnancy in the overview
- You confirm the pregnancy or mark the mating as unsuccessful
- At birth, you link the lambs or kids to the mating
- The young animals are automatically created in the herd — with the correct pedigree
- In the pedigree view you see family relationships across generations
- Through weight monitoring you track the development of the young animals
- With tail-length measurement you document this breed-specific trait
Tip: You do not have to start with a mating. If you want to add a birth retrospectively for a purchased animal, for example, you can record the birth without linking it to a mating.
