Assigning animals to groups

In Herdy you can assign animals to groups in several ways. Whether individually from the animal profile, from the group view, or several at once — the choice is yours.

From the group view

The easiest way to add animals to a group is through the group view:

  1. Open the Groups tab in the navigation.
  2. Tap the desired group.
  3. Tap Add animals.
  4. A selection list of all available animals appears. Animals already in the group are not shown.
  5. Search for animals using the search bar (by ear tag or name).
  6. Select the desired animals by tapping them.
  7. Confirm the selection by tapping Assign.

The animals are added to the group immediately and appear in the member list.

From the animal profile

You can also assign a group directly from an individual animal's profile:

  1. Open the animal profile by tapping the animal in the animal list.
  2. Switch to the Groups tab.
  3. Tap Add to group.
  4. Select one or more groups from the list.
  5. Confirm the assignment.

In the Groups tab of the animal profile you can see all current group memberships along with the date the animal joined each group.

Tip: An animal can belong to any number of groups at the same time. A ewe can, for example, be in a breeding group, a pasture group, and a production group simultaneously.

Assigning multiple animals at once (bulk assignment)

If you want to assign several animals to a group at the same time, use selection mode in the animal list:

  1. Open the animal list in the Animals tab.
  2. Tap Select (selection mode).
  3. Select the desired animals by tapping them. The number of selected animals is shown (e.g. "5 selected").
  4. Tap Assign group.
  5. Choose the target group.
  6. Confirm the assignment.

All selected animals are added to the group.

Exiting selection mode

To leave selection mode without performing an action, tap Cancel. The selection is cleared and you return to the normal view.

Tip: Apply filters before activating selection mode. If you want to assign all active sheep of a specific breed, for example, filter by species and breed first, then select the animals. This is much faster.

Removing animals from a group

From the group view

  1. Open the group in the Groups tab.
  2. Find the animal in the member list.
  3. Tap Remove animal next to the animal.
  4. The animal is removed from the group.

From the animal profile

  1. Open the animal profile.
  2. Switch to the Groups tab.
  3. Remove the desired group membership.

Removing an animal from a group is automatically recorded in the animal's history.

What happens in the background?

Every group assignment and every removal is automatically recorded by Herdy in the animal's history:

  • Joined group — Recorded when an animal is assigned to a group
  • Left group — Recorded when an animal is removed from a group

This gives you a complete record of which animal was in which group and when. You can find this information in the History tab of the respective animal profile.

Tip: The group history is especially useful for traceability. If you want to know which animals were on the alp in summer 2025, for example, you can look it up in the history at any time.
