Create & manage groups
This section explains how to create, edit, and organise groups in Herdy.
Creating a new group
- Switch to the Groups tab in the navigation.
- Tap Create new group.
- Fill in the details:
- Group name — A descriptive name, e.g. "Breeding group Ram Bruno" or "Fattening lambs Autumn 2026"
- Group type — Choose the appropriate type (see below)
- Description (optional) — Additional information about the group
- Colour — Choose a colour for visual distinction
- Tap Create group.
The new group appears immediately in your group overview and is available as a filter chip in the animal list.
Group types in detail
Production
The Production type is suited for animals you keep for meat or milk production. Typical examples:
- "Fattening lambs Spring 2026"
- "Dairy sheep"
- "Slaughter lambs Autumn"
- "Wool sheep"
Breeding
The Breeding type is intended for breeding animals. You can bring together animals that are used collectively for breeding. Typical examples:
- "Breeding group Ram Max"
- "Ewe lambs 2025 (replacements)"
- "Dam line A"
- "Buck group"
Tip: Create a separate breeding group for each ram or buck with the ewes or does assigned to it. That way you will always know exactly which animals were mated together.
Pasture
The Pasture type helps you group animals by their current grazing location. This is especially useful for alpine summering (Sömmerung) or when you manage several paddocks. Typical examples:
- "Upper pasture"
- "Alpine summering Alp Muster 2026"
- "Winter pasture valley"
- "Paddock North"
Treatment
The Treatment type is for animals that require or have received a specific treatment. It helps you keep track of which animals still need to be treated. Typical examples:
- "Spring deworming 2026"
- "Hoof trimming due"
- "Vaccination group bluetongue"
- "Quarantine new arrivals"
Tip: Treatment groups are particularly useful when you are carrying out a treatment over several days. Create the group, assign all affected animals, and remove them again once treatment is complete.
Editing groups
You can change the details of an existing group at any time:
- Open the group in the group overview.
- Edit the desired fields (name, type, description, colour).
- Save your changes.
Viewing group members
When you open a group you can see all animals currently assigned to it. For each animal the following is shown:
- Ear tag
- Name (if available)
- Date the animal joined the group
The number of members is also displayed next to each group in the group overview.
Using colours
Every group has a colour shown in the group overview. Use different colours to distinguish your groups at a glance. There are no fixed rules — choose the colours that work best for you.
Tip: For example, use green for pasture groups, red for treatment groups, and blue for breeding groups. That way you can immediately tell what kind of group you are looking at.
Tips for a good group structure
- Descriptive names: Use names that clearly describe the purpose of the group. Add the year for seasonal groups.
- Not too many groups: Only create as many groups as you actually need. Too many groups can become hard to manage.
- Clean up: Remove animals from groups that are no longer current (e.g. after completing a treatment).
- Use group types: Choose the type carefully so that you can quickly assign groups to the right category.
