Batch Sessions

Efficient bulk recording: treatments, weighings, and health events for many animals at once — with automatic saving and ear-tag scanning.

Overview

Batch sessions are the most efficient way to complete the same task for many animals one after another. Instead of filling in a separate form for each animal, you configure the shared details once — then work through each animal until all are done.

Every entry is saved immediately. If your connection is interrupted or you close the app briefly, no data is lost.

What is a session?

A session is a working mode optimised for repetitive tasks:

  • Template — You define the shared fields once that apply to all animals (e.g. the medication for a deworming run)
  • Animal by animal — You then select or scan each animal one at a time
  • Automatic saving — Every entry is saved immediately without you having to tap a save button
  • Progress — You can see at any time how many animals have already been processed

This saves a great deal of time because you do not have to re-enter the recurring details for every animal.

Session types

Herdy offers three types of sessions:

Treatment

You set the medication, dosage, and diagnosis once. Then you scan or select each animal in turn. For every animal, a complete, TAMV-compliant treatment entry is created automatically.

Ideal for:

  • Deworming days (whole herd or group)
  • Group vaccinations (e.g. bluetongue)
  • Ectoparasite treatments
  • Routine medication rounds

Weight

You choose the date and then start scanning or selecting animals one by one. For each animal you enter the individual weight. A whole weigh day is documented in next to no time.

Ideal for:

  • Weigh days (e.g. monthly weight checks)
  • Weaning weight (lambs before weaning)
  • Pre-sale weight checks

Health event

You choose the event type once (e.g. hoof trimming or castration). Then you work through the animals in sequence.

Ideal for:

  • Hoof trimming rounds
  • Castrations
  • Routine health checks

How to start a session

1. Set up the session

  1. Go to Actions > Start session
  2. Choose the desired session type: Treatment, Weight, or Health event
  3. Fill in the template — these are the fields that remain the same for all animals:
    • For Treatment: medication, dosage, diagnosis, veterinarian
    • For Weight: date
    • For Health event: event type
  4. Tap Start session

2. Process animals

Now the actual batch work begins. For each animal:

  1. Identify the animal — Scan the ear tag with the camera or search for the animal by name or ear tag
  2. Enter individual data — If needed, enter the animal-specific data (e.g. weight for a weigh session)
  3. Entry is saved automatically — Once the data is complete, Herdy saves the entry automatically
  4. Next animal — Tap Next animal to continue with the next one

At the top of the page you can always see the progress: X animals processed. This keeps you on top of how many animals have been completed.

3. End the session

When all animals have been processed:

  1. Tap End session
  2. Herdy shows you a summary: how many entries were saved and which animals were processed
  3. All entries are already saved — you do not need to do anything else

Correcting errors

If you made a mistake for an animal, you can undo the last entry:

  • Tap Undo to remove the most recently saved entry
  • Then process the animal again with the correct data

Tip: The undo function always refers to the last entry. If you need to correct an older entry, end the session and edit the entry directly in the relevant detail view (e.g. Treatments or Weights).

Reviewing the summary

After ending the session, Herdy shows you an overview of all processed animals with their entries. This lets you check once more that everything was recorded correctly.

The individual entries also appear in the relevant sections of the app — treatments in the health module, weights in the breeding area, and all events in the movement history.

Practical examples

Deworming day

You need to deworm 40 sheep. Without a session you would have to fill in the same form 40 times. With a session:

  1. Set up the session: medication "Ivermectin", dosage "5 ml", diagnosis "Routine deworming"
  2. Start the session
  3. Go from animal to animal: scan ear tag, saved automatically, next animal
  4. After 40 animals: end session

This takes only a few minutes instead of half an hour.

Weigh day

All lambs need to be weighed:

  1. Choose session type "Weight", set the date
  2. Start the session
  3. Place the lamb on the scale, scan ear tag, enter weight, next animal
  4. End session and review the summary

Hoof trimming round

The whole herd gets hoof trimming:

  1. Choose session type "Health event", type "Hoof trimming"
  2. Start the session
  3. Animal by animal: scan ear tag, saved automatically, next animal
  4. End session

Tip: Batch sessions are ideal for any situation where you are working through multiple animals with the same task. Use the scan function — it makes batch work even faster because you do not have to type in the ear tag numbers.
