First: when Barto is the better choice.
If you run a pure dairy operation, take Barto. Barto calculates the Suisse-Bilanz, keeps a field calendar and crop rotation, is federally recognised for the nutrient balance, and exchanges data directly with several cantons. Herdy has none of that, and we are not building it.
If your main concern is milk yield or breeding values, the same applies. Neither is built in Herdy, and neither is on the plan.
Barto is not a bad product, and whoever bought it did nothing wrong. This page is not about what Barto gets wrong. It is about the animals it was not made for.
Herdy is the better choice when sheep or goats make up a substantial part of your farm — on their own or alongside cattle. For those animals there is exactly one program that files the report itself instead of preparing it for you.
The rows where the two genuinely differ.
Everything both of them can do — cattle reports, treatment journal, exercise log, herd register — is not listed here. It would be a long list that says nothing.

Barto for the cattle, Herdy for the small ruminants.
For a farm with forty-five suckler cows and a hundred and ten sheep this is often the most sensible answer: you keep Barto for the cattle side and the crops, and give the sheep something of their own for the first time. You then pay twice — in return, the animals that get nothing today get the same treatment as the cattle: their own reports, a treatment journal with withdrawal periods, an exercise log and a herd register at the press of a button. Your herd is already in the TVD. Herdy fetches it — cattle, sheep and goats, with ear tag numbers, sex and birth dates. What is not in the TVD comes in by CSV. And all of it comes back out as CSV or PDF.
