Pick the dam, enter live and stillborn, then for each young animal the sex, birth weight, colour and ear tag. You pull the ear tag number from your stock, which Herdy fetches out of the TVD, so no eight-digit number typed with cold fingers. Birth ease and mothering score are two taps, and leaving them out costs you nothing.

One birth creates, in a single step: the young animal as an animal, its birth weight, the entry in the pedigree, and the birth report to the TVD. The report is a draft until you send it, and Herdy checks it for completeness first and names the missing field instead of an error code. You have 30 days for a birth; Herdy tracks the deadline.

What else comes out of the births
Mating date becomes due date
Record the mating, natural service or AI, and Herdy calculates the date: 147 days for sheep, 150 for goats, 283 for cattle, overridable per mating. The overview shows «due this week», «due in 8 to 30 days» and «overdue».
Dam, sire, pedigree
From the moment it is entered, every young animal hangs off its dam and sire. The pedigree separates the maternal and paternal lines, every ancestor is clickable, and you print a pedigree record as a PDF, while the official Abstammungsausweis is still issued by your recognised breeding organisation. Herdy shows the inbreeding coefficient inside the mating form itself, with the common ancestors that caused it, before you save.
The figures you otherwise estimate
Average litter size, share born alive, birth interval, average birth weight and the distribution of birth ease, per dam and across the whole herd. Out of your own entries, not out of a feeling.
Your herd is already in the TVD. Herdy fetches it, with ear tag numbers, sex and birth dates. Ancestry and old births that exist only in your binder come across by CSV or not at all. We would rather say that up front.
Switching and data migrationFrequently asked questions about breeding and births
No, and that is deliberate. Herdy prepares the report as a draft; you look at it, check it and send it. Before sending, Herdy checks completeness and warns about a duplicate, and after the click you still have a moment to abort. A report goes to an authority in your name, a step in between is right for that.
