Overview

In addition to treatments and vaccinations, there are other health-relevant events that you may wish to document for your animals. Herdy provides health events for this purpose: a simple way to record castrations, hoof trimming, and general observations.

All recorded events automatically appear in the timeline of the respective animal, so you can view the complete health history in one place.

Event types

Castration

Document castrations with the method used:

  • Rubber ring -- Elastrator method, commonly used on lambs in the first days of life
  • Clamp (Burdizzo) -- Bloodless method using a clamping tool
  • Surgical -- Operative castration by the veterinarian

Hoof trimming

Document routine or therapeutic hoof trimming with the respective finding:

  • Normal -- Regular hoof trimming without notable findings
  • Foot rot -- Treatment of an existing foot rot infection
  • Overgrowth -- Correction of excessively grown hoof horn
  • Abscess -- Treatment of a hoof abscess

General observation

For all other health events that cannot be assigned to a specific category. Use this type for:

  • Abnormalities in behaviour or condition
  • Injuries that are not treated with medication
  • Observations that you want to record for later

Recording an event

How to document a health event:

  1. Go to Health > Events
  2. Tap New event
  3. Fill in the following fields:
  • Event type -- Select between castration, hoof trimming, or general observation
  • Animal -- Select the affected animal from your herd
  • Date -- When did the event take place?
  • Specific fields -- Depending on the event type:
    • For castration: the method (rubber ring, clamp, surgical)
    • For hoof trimming: the finding (normal, foot rot, overgrowth, abscess)
  • Notes -- Free text field for additional details and observations
  1. Tap Save

Tip: Document hoof trimming consistently, even when there are no notable findings. This way you can identify patterns: which animals need care more frequently? Does foot rot recur in certain animals?

Events in the animal timeline

All health events automatically appear in the Timeline tab of the animal profile. There you can see the complete history of the animal in chronological order: treatments, vaccinations, health events, weight measurements, and more.

How to access the timeline:

  1. Go to Animals and select the desired animal
  2. Tap the Timeline tab
  3. Scroll through the timeline

The different event types are colour-coded so that you can quickly identify what type of entry it is.

Tip: The animal timeline is particularly useful during a veterinary visit. Open the profile of the affected animal and show the veterinarian the complete health history at a glance.
