Overview
The Medications tab in the health module leads into the master data. That is where your medication catalogue with stock, receipts and disposals lives, and where you add a new product. The full guide is under Medications.
This page explains the other direction: what the catalogue does inside a treatment. Every detail you store on a product shows up again in the treatment form, and some of them decide the withdrawal period.
Selection in the treatment form
When you pick the type Medication in the treatment form, the Medication field opens a searchable list. Next to each product it shows the unit and the current stock, for example «Ivomec Drench · ml | 392.5». So you can see at selection time whether the supply is still enough.
If a product is missing, add it through Record new medication straight from the form, without abandoning the treatment.
Archived products do not appear in the selection. They stay in every existing entry and on the inventory list.
What the selected product brings into the form
| Detail on the product | Effect in the treatment form |
|---|---|
| Unit | fills the «Unit» field and cannot be changed there |
| Withdrawal period meat, milk, organs | fills the withdrawal fields; you can override them if your vet prescribed different periods |
| Default dosage | is proposed as the quantity |
| Dosage basis | «Per kg body weight» shows the dose calculator, «Per animal» does not |
| Usual route of administration | is preselected under route of administration |
| Chemically synthesised allopathic | on organic farms this drives the doubling of the withdrawal period |
| Dry-off product | the only exception to the doubling |
| Antibiotic and critical substance class | fill the columns of the organic journal and trigger the antibiogram notices on Bud farms |
| Counts towards the organic limit | decides whether the treatment counts towards the limit of three treatments per calendar year |
| Category «Antiparasitic» | makes the treatment visible in the deworming overview |
Per-kilogram dosing
If the label states a rate such as «1 ml per 10 kg», set the dosage basis on the product to «Per kg body weight» and store the rate per kilogram. A calculator then appears in the treatment form:
- It takes the animal's most recent weighing, with its date and age
- If the weighing is older than 30 days it is marked amber
- It multiplies rate by weight and writes the result into the quantity field
- In a group treatment it asks for the heaviest animal in the group
The calculated quantity stays editable. What gets stored is always the amount actually administered, as the TAMV requires.
Stock deduction
When you save a treatment with a product, Herdy deducts the amount used from the stock automatically. Nothing extra to book. In a group treatment the amount is deducted per animal.
For the arithmetic to work the receipt has to be recorded. Book new deliveries as soon as they arrive, see Medications.
Only record what goes into stock. Anything used up immediately for a running treatment belongs in the treatment journal, not on the inventory list.
Derivation of the withdrawal periods
From the date of the last application and the withdrawal days of the product, Herdy calculates the release dates for meat, milk and organs. The period starts on the day after the last application; the release date is the first day that is allowed again.
On organic farms Herdy doubles the period for chemically synthesised allopathic products. The notice in the form names both values so you can check against the packaging. See Withdrawal periods.
If you later change the withdrawal period on the product, the new value applies to new treatments only. Existing entries are never rewritten.
Stock and expiry on the health overview
Two cards on the health overview read from the catalogue:
- Low stock: products you should reorder
- Expiring soon: batches expiring within the next 30 days
Both lead straight into the medication list.
Tip: check the withdrawal periods and the organic classification carefully when you create a product. Herdy calculates with these values on every treatment, and wrong values only surface during an inspection.
