Pigs: arrival notification as a group

Why pigs are reported differently and how to submit an arrival with a head count and holding of origin.

Last updated · September 5, 2026· 1 min read

Overview

Pigs follow different rules in the TVD than cattle, sheep and goats. Swiss pigs have no individual TVD identity, they are not registered animal by animal. Accordingly there is no birth, departure or death notification for pigs.

Only the arrival is reported, and as a group: number of animals, TVD number of the holding of origin and date. When pigs leave your holding you report nothing at all, the receiving holding files its arrival notification.

Pig arrival notification with form and the list of earlier notifications

Requirements

  • The Pigs tab only appears when your herd contains pigs or is still empty.
  • For submission to the TVD your Agate account must additionally be authorised for the pig genus. If it is not, Herdy says so openly: «TVD notifications for pigs have not been enabled for this holding yet.» You can still record notifications as drafts and submit them later.
  • A valid Agate session and a linked holding, see Setting up the TVD connection.

Ear tags on pigs identify the holding, not the individual animal. In Herdy they are useful for your internal records, not as an individual TVD identity.

Reporting an arrival

  1. Go to TVD > Pigs.
  2. Enter the arrival date. It must not be in the future, and no earlier than 2020.
  3. Enter the number of animals, at least 1 and at most 9999.
  4. Enter the TVD number of the holding of origin, that is the holding the pigs come from. It has seven digits, for example 9000209. Separators and dots may be left out.
  5. Optionally add notes for your own records.
  6. Click Submit to TVD, or Save as draft if you want to send later.

The deadline is three working days from the arrival.

The list of notifications

Below the form Herdy keeps every pig arrival notification with date, count, holding of origin and status. Each row offers Submit and Delete.

StatusMeaning
DraftRecorded, not yet sent.
PendingCurrently being processed.
SubmittedDelivered to the TVD.
ConfirmedAccepted by the TVD.
ErrorThe TVD rejected it. The reason is in the row.
UncertainDelivery could not be confirmed.
CancelledThe notification was closed.

Important with «Uncertain»: Do not simply submit again. Check in the TVD first whether it arrived. Otherwise you create a double notification.

If Error appears with a note about a missing authorisation, your Agate account is not enabled for the pig genus. Clarify that with your cantonal veterinary office or with identitas.ch.

Common questions

Do I have to report the birth of piglets? No. The TVD does not track pigs individually.

Do I have to report pigs leaving my holding? No. The keeper reports nothing when pigs leave. The receiving holding files its arrival notification.

Can I keep individual pigs in Herdy? Yes, for your own herd records. Only towards the TVD they count as a number, not as individuals.
