Locations

Farm, pasture, alpine pasture, and stable — manage locations for animal management and TVD notifications.

Overview

Locations are the physical places where you keep your animals. In Herdy you can record different location types and assign a TVD number to each location. Locations are used when registering animals, for TVD notifications, and for alpine summering (Sömmerung).

You can access location management via Master Data > Locations.

Location types

Herdy supports four types of locations:

Farm

The farm is your main location — your agricultural holding. You typically have one farm defined as the home location. This is automatically pre-selected when registering new animals.

Pasture

A pasture is an outdoor location where your animals graze. You can record multiple pastures, e.g. for different enclosures or parcels.

Alpine pasture

The alpine pasture is a seasonal location for alpine summering (Sömmerung). When you send your animals to an alpine pasture in summer, record it as a separate location. This is particularly important for TVD notifications at the start and end of the summer season.

Stable

A stable is an enclosed location on your farm. You can record different stables, e.g. a lambing stable, a shearing stable, or a quarantine stable.

Creating a new location

  1. Go to Master Data > Locations
  2. Tap New Location
  3. Fill in the details:
    • Name — a descriptive name, e.g. "Upper pasture" or "Alpine pasture Musteralp"
    • Type — select Farm, Pasture, Alpine pasture, or Stable
    • TVD number (optional) — the official location number in the livestock traffic database
    • Address (optional) — the address of the location
    • Notes (optional) — additional information about the location
  4. If desired, enable the Home location option.
  5. Tap Save.

TVD number (location number)

The TVD number is the official identification number of a location in the Swiss livestock traffic database. Not all locations require a TVD number. As a rule, your main farm has a TVD number, and alpine pasture locations often have their own.

Tip: You can find your TVD number on your official livestock traffic database documents, or you can request it from your cantonal authority.

Setting the home location

The home location is the default location for your farm. It is automatically pre-selected when registering new animals, so you do not have to choose the location manually every time.

To mark a location as the home location, enable the corresponding option when creating or editing the location. Only one location can be the home location at a time. If you set a new home location, the previous one is automatically reset.

The home location is specially marked in the location list.

Editing a location

  1. Go to Master Data > Locations
  2. Tap the location you want to edit
  3. Tap Edit
  4. Change the desired fields
  5. Tap Save

Archiving a location

If you no longer use a location — e.g. because you have given up a pasture — you can archive it:

  1. Open the relevant location
  2. Tap Archive
  3. Confirm the archiving

Archived locations are no longer shown in selection lists but are retained in historical data. This ensures traceability is maintained.

Animals at a location

The detail page of a location shows you how many animals are currently at that location. This gives you an overview at any time of where your herd is.

Why locations matter

Locations play a central role in official documentation:

  • TVD compliance: Locations must be correctly recorded for notifications to the livestock traffic database. In particular, for alpine summering the alpine pasture location with TVD number is required.
  • Traceability: In the event of a disease outbreak, authorities must be able to quickly determine which animals are at which location.
  • Farm overview: You can see at a glance how many animals are at each location.

Tip: Set up your home location and the most important locations right at the start, before you begin entering animals. This way the correct location is automatically suggested when registering animals.
